THE CHRISTMAS STORY EXPLAINED: THE BIRTH OF JESUS IN THE BIBLE
Every Christmas, we hear the familiar story.
A young woman named Mary.
A faithful man named Joseph.
A journey to Bethlehem.
A baby lying in a manger.
Angels announcing wonderful news.
And shepherds rushing to see the newborn Savior.
It's a story many of us have heard since childhood.
But have you ever stopped to think about just how extraordinary the first Christmas truly was?
Behind the beautiful Nativity scenes and familiar Christmas songs is a story of faith, obedience, fulfilled promises, and the incredible love of God.
The Christmas story isn't simply about the birth of a baby.
It's about the arrival of the Savior the world had been waiting for.
And when we take time to understand the biblical account of Jesus' birth, Christmas becomes so much more meaningful.
Whether you're reading the Christmas story for the first time, sharing it with your family, or looking for a deeper understanding of the birth of Jesus, let's walk through what the Bible actually says.
Because the greatest Christmas story ever told is also the greatest story of God's love. ♡
♡ 1. WHERE IS THE CHRISTMAS STORY FOUND IN THE BIBLE?
The biblical account of Jesus' birth is primarily found in two books of the New Testament:
Matthew chapters 1–2 and Luke chapters 1–2.
Both Gospels tell us about the arrival of Jesus, but each emphasizes different details.
The Gospel of Matthew focuses on Joseph's experience, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, the visit of the wise men, and the events surrounding King Herod.
The Gospel of Luke gives us details about Mary's experience, the angel Gabriel's announcement, the journey to Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus, and the shepherds who received the joyful news.
Together, these accounts help us understand the events surrounding the birth of Christ.
If you're looking for a Christmas Bible reading tradition, reading Luke 1–2 and Matthew 1–2 is a beautiful place to begin.
And as you read, remember that the Christmas story didn't begin in Bethlehem.
It began with God's promises long before Jesus was born.
♡ 2. GOD PROMISED A SAVIOR LONG BEFORE THE FIRST CHRISTMAS
Centuries before Jesus' birth, the Old Testament contained promises that Christians understand as pointing toward the coming Messiah.
One of the most familiar is found in Isaiah 9:6:
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given." (KJV)
Another prophecy appears in Micah 5:2, which speaks of a ruler coming from Bethlehem.
For generations, God's people waited for the promised Savior.
And while they could not have known every detail of how God's plan would unfold, His promises remained.
Then, in God's appointed time, Jesus came into the world.
Galatians 4:4 reminds us:
"But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law." (KJV)
What a beautiful reminder that God is faithful.
Sometimes we want Him to answer our prayers immediately.
We want to understand His plans.
We want to know exactly when something will happen.
But the Christmas story reminds us that God's timing has a purpose.
Even when the waiting is long, His faithfulness remains.
♡ 3. THE ANGEL GABRIEL VISITS MARY
The Christmas story takes a beautiful turn in Luke chapter 1.
God sends the angel Gabriel to a young woman named Mary, who is engaged to Joseph.
Gabriel tells Mary that she has found favor with God and will give birth to a son named Jesus.
Luke 1:31 says:
"And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS." (KJV)
Imagine how Mary must have felt.
Her life was about to change in a way she could never have imagined.
She had questions.
She did not understand how everything would happen.
But Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and that the child would be called the Son of God.
Then came one of the most encouraging statements in the Christmas story.
Luke 1:37:
"For with God nothing shall be impossible." (KJV)
Mary responded with humility and willingness to accept God's Word.
Her example reminds us that faith does not always mean understanding every detail.
Sometimes faith means trusting God with what comes next.
Maybe you're in a season where God is asking you to trust Him without knowing exactly how things will unfold.
Remember Mary's story.
God was working in ways far greater than she could have imagined.
♡ 4. JOSEPH CHOOSES TO TRUST AND OBEY GOD
Joseph is sometimes overlooked in the Christmas story.
But his faith and obedience are an important part of the biblical account.
When Joseph learned that Mary was expecting a child, he initially planned to end their engagement quietly.
Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.
The angel explained that Mary's child was conceived through the Holy Spirit and instructed Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife.
Matthew 1:21 says:
"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." (KJV)
Joseph obeyed.
Even though the circumstances were unusual.
Even though he could not have understood everything that lay ahead.
He trusted God's message.
And his obedience reminds us of something beautiful.
Sometimes following God requires courage.
It may mean choosing faith over fear.
Obedience over comfort.
And trust over the desire to have every answer.
Joseph's story is a reminder that God can work through ordinary people who are willing to follow Him.
♡ 5. MARY AND JOSEPH TRAVEL TO BETHLEHEM
In Luke chapter 2, we learn that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus for a registration.
Joseph traveled from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea because he belonged to the house and lineage of David.
Mary accompanied him.
And while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for Jesus to be born.
This detail is significant because Bethlehem had been mentioned in Old Testament prophecy concerning the coming ruler.
The place where Jesus was born was not an accident in the biblical story.
It was part of the fulfillment of God's promises.
Sometimes God is working through circumstances that seem ordinary or inconvenient.
A journey.
A change of plans.
An unexpected season.
And while we should not assume that every difficult circumstance has a hidden explanation we can identify, the Christmas story reminds us that God's purposes are greater than our limited understanding.
♡ 6. JESUS IS BORN AND LAID IN A MANGER
Then comes the moment at the heart of Christmas.
Luke 2:7 tells us:
"And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn." (KJV)
Jesus was born.
The promised Savior had arrived.
And yet, the circumstances of His birth were remarkably humble.
Mary wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, a feeding trough for animals.
The Bible does not provide every detail of the building or exact surroundings where Jesus was born.
But it clearly tells us that His first resting place was a manger.
Think about the beauty of that moment.
The Son of God entered the world without the earthly splendor we might expect for a king.
There was no royal palace.
No extravagant celebration described at His birth.
Yet the significance of what happened was beyond measure.
This is one of the most comforting truths of Christmas.
God's greatest gifts are not measured by worldly appearances.
And the most meaningful things in life are not always the most impressive.
Sometimes they arrive quietly.
Humbly.
In ways we never expected.
♡ 7. ANGELS ANNOUNCE THE BIRTH OF JESUS TO THE SHEPHERDS
That same night, shepherds were watching over their flocks in the fields nearby.
Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared to them.
The glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were afraid.
But the angel brought wonderful news.
Luke 2:10–11 says:
"Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." (KJV)
Imagine being one of those shepherds.
An ordinary night.
An ordinary responsibility.
And suddenly, a heavenly announcement that would change everything.
The Savior had been born.
Then a multitude of heavenly beings praised God, saying:
"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." (Luke 2:14, KJV)
What makes this moment so beautiful is that the announcement came to shepherds going about their everyday work.
They weren't gathered in a palace.
They weren't expecting a royal announcement.
But God chose to reveal this incredible news to them.
The Christmas story reminds us that the good news of Jesus is not reserved for the powerful or wealthy.
It is good news meant to be shared.
♡ 8. THE SHEPHERDS VISIT BABY JESUS
After hearing the angel's announcement, the shepherds decided to go to Bethlehem.
They wanted to see what the Lord had made known to them.
Luke 2:16 tells us:
"And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger." (KJV)
The shepherds saw Jesus.
And after witnessing what had been announced to them, they shared the news with others.
They returned glorifying and praising God.
Their response gives us a beautiful example of what Christmas should inspire in our own hearts.
Wonder.
Gratitude.
Worship.
And a desire to tell others about Jesus.
Sometimes we become so familiar with the Christmas story that we forget to be amazed by it.
But the shepherds remind us to approach the birth of Christ with joy.
To recognize the goodness of God.
And to share the hope we have found in Him.
♡ 9. THE WISE MEN FOLLOW THE STAR TO WORSHIP JESUS
Another familiar part of the Christmas story is the visit of the wise men.
Their story is found in Matthew chapter 2.
The wise men traveled from the east after seeing a star associated with the birth of the King of the Jews.
They eventually came to worship Jesus.
Matthew 2:11 tells us that they entered a house, saw the young child with Mary, and presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
One important detail is that the Bible does not say the wise men arrived on the same night Jesus was born.
Their visit occurred sometime after His birth.
And although Nativity scenes often show three wise men, Scripture does not tell us exactly how many there were.
The tradition of three likely comes from the three gifts mentioned.
What matters most is why they came.
They came to worship Jesus.
They recognized His significance and honored Him with valuable gifts.
Their story reminds us that worship is at the heart of Christmas.
The greatest response to the birth of Jesus is not simply giving presents.
It is honoring the Savior.
♡ 10. WHY DID JESUS COME INTO THE WORLD?
The Christmas story becomes even more meaningful when we understand why Jesus was born.
Jesus did not come simply to inspire a beautiful holiday tradition.
He came to save.
Matthew 1:21 explains that He would save His people from their sins.
John 3:16 tells us:
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (KJV)
This is the heart of the Gospel.
God loved humanity.
And through Jesus Christ, He made a way for sinners to be forgiven and reconciled to Him.
The baby born in Bethlehem would grow up, teach, heal, and reveal the character of God.
He would give His life on the cross.
And He would rise again.
The birth of Jesus is the beginning of His earthly life, but the significance of His coming reaches far beyond the manger.
Christmas points us toward the entire story of salvation.
And that is why the birth of Jesus still matters today.
♡ 11. WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THE CHRISTMAS STORY?
The Christmas story is filled with lessons that remain meaningful for our everyday lives.
GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISES
The birth of Jesus reminds us that God is faithful to His Word.
WE CAN TRUST GOD WITHOUT HAVING EVERY ANSWER
Mary and Joseph both demonstrated faith in circumstances they could not fully understand.
GOD VALUES HUMILITY
Jesus' humble birth reminds us that worldly status and extravagance do not determine true significance.
THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS IS FOR EVERYONE
The angel's announcement to the shepherds was described as good news of great joy for all people.
WORSHIP SHOULD BE AT THE CENTER OF CHRISTMAS
The shepherds praised God, and the wise men came to worship Jesus.
GOD'S LOVE IS THE GREATEST GIFT
Above every Christmas tradition stands the incredible gift of Jesus Christ.
These truths are worth remembering not only during December, but throughout the entire year.
♡ 12. HOW TO MAKE THE CHRISTMAS STORY PART OF YOUR FAMILY TRADITIONS

♡ 14. A CHRISTMAS PRAYER INSPIRED BY THE BIRTH OF JESUS
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful story of Christmas.
Thank You for keeping Your promises and sending Jesus into the world.
As I reflect on His birth, help me remember the depth of Your love.
Teach me to trust You as Mary did.
Give me the courage to obey You as Joseph did.
Fill my heart with the joy of the shepherds who heard the wonderful news.
And help me worship Jesus with the same intentionality shown by the wise men.
When Christmas becomes busy, remind me to slow down.
When I become distracted by gifts and decorations, bring my attention back to the Savior.
And when life feels uncertain, remind me that You are faithful.
May my heart be filled with gratitude, peace, and a deeper love for Jesus.
In His precious name,
Amen. ♡
